Telefónica, a Spanish multinational telecommunications company, and IQM Quantum Computers, a superconducting quantum computer developer, will install the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) before the end of 2026.
According to a Telefónica press release, the IQM Spark system is designed for research, education and early-stage development. It will give universities, hospitals, research centers and startups direct access to quantum computing hardware to develop and test algorithms. The project expands the companies’ existing collaboration, which includes the deployment of two quantum computers at the Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA).
“This project marks another step forward in Telefónica’s close collaboration with the Community of Madrid in the deployment of quantum technologies, both in networks and in the encryption and protection of critical data in particularly sensitive sectors such as healthcare and security, and now also through the research opportunities offered by quantum computing,” said, Borja Ochoa, non-executive chairman, Telefónica España and CEO, B2B.
“By investing in its own quantum computer, the Community of Madrid is creating an infrastructure that will enable its researchers, students and industries to grow their capabilities over the long term,” said Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder, IQM Quantum Computers. “Quantum computing becomes truly valuable when it moves beyond remote laboratory environments and is placed directly in the hands of those working closest to the real-world challenges it can help address.”
The installation is expected to expand the region’s research capabilities and support the development of practical applications for local industries. It will also help build a regional quantum technology ecosystem and develop specialized skills.
IQM has already deployed quantum computers in Europe, Asia and South America, including at major supercomputing centers. The company supplies systems for research and applications in fields such as materials science and financial modeling.
